Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) Lead

OVERVIEW

At Westonbirt Prep, a creative and ambitious curriculum, a team of talented and enthusiastic staff and the glorious Gloucestershire countryside combine to create the perfect conditions for learning.

We are seeking to appoint a dedicated teacher with relevant experience to lead Learning Support at the Prep School, and co-ordinate provision for pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. This will include overseeing support for EAL pupils.

Hours, Salary & Benefits:

Hours: Part time, 3 days a week. Role to begin in September 2025, but flexible to suit the right candidate. Term time only.

Job Description:

  • Provide inspirational leadership of SEND across the school, promoting inclusion and high-quality provision for pupils with SEND.
  • Support the Head in determining the strategic development of SEND across the school and ensuring the SEND policy is up to date and adhered to by all staff.
  • Ensure that the school meets its statutory obligations regarding SEN under the Equality Act, 2010 and SEND Code of Practice, 2014.
  • Support all adults within school in understanding the needs of pupils with SEND and delivering regular professional development sessions for teaching staff and assistants.
  • Ensure effective records are kept so all staff are aware of the SEND register, provision maps and pupil profiles.
  • Lead the review of Learning Plans and Provision Maps, ensuring staff are suitably supported and advised in the creation of these. Attend meetings with parents and staff to review these as required.
  • Co-ordinate SEN provision across the school, including Nursery.
  • Lead and oversee the planning and quality of teaching of a team of specialist Learning Support staff.
  • Work with parents, staff and external professionals to ensure high-quality provision for pupils with SEND and any recommendations are embedded into a pupil’s daily support.
  • Develop a collaborative and supportive relationship with parents ensuring they are central to their child’s SEND support within school.
  • Liaise with external professionals such as Speech & Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Educational Psychologists, Paediatricians and child therapists and, where appropriate inviting them into school.
  • Interpret and share information from specialist assessment reports from external professionals and use this information to inform SEND provision and additional support.
  • Manage and review Education, Health and Care (EHC) Plans, coordinating support and interventions.
  • Carry out observations and assessments at the earliest opportunity to support understanding of additional needs and ensure support is put in place.
  • Develop a close working relationship with the Early Years Foundation Stage to ensure staff are supported and potential SEND needs are identified and supported as early as possible.
  • Undertake/maintain Level 3 Safeguarding Training and be a Prep DDSL, joining termly Safeguarding Team meetings and contributing to the effective leadership of Safeguarding in the Prep School.
  • Contribute to the wider life of the school, lead clubs and undertake duties in rotation with other staff, and attend meetings as required.
