3, 2, 1... Lego!

What a day! 170 students from four Wishford schools went head-to-head in an incredible FIRST LEGO League challenge last week. It was better than we could possibly have hoped. The energy and focus in the room was phenomenal, and it was hard to tell who was the more enthusiastic, the competitors or the STEM staff who had put so much work into getting them here.

We always celebrate the individual nature of our schools, but it was amazing to see them come together with a united vision – the camaraderie, the competitiveness, the laughter and celebration. Huge congratulations to Westonbirt School’s team, Spike Squad, who took home the champion’s trophy and will be heading to the UK finals in Harrogate in April, where they’ll take on the very best coders and engineers from across the country.

Lego robotics, and all its constituent elements, is central to Wishford’s wider STEM curriculum. It is certainly about far more than just one day of competition. Students have spent months researching, learning and preparing, followed by weeks of building, coding and practising to get competition-ready. Find out how we got here in this interview with Educational Technology Lead Camilla Evans.

Wishford’s commitment to STEM reaches far beyond the classroom. The Wishford Centre for Innovation is our hub for educational research, professional development, and creative collaboration. It exists to drive research and improve teaching, helping teachers and school leaders move learning forward with evidence-based practice. In particular, we focus on Artificial Intelligence and human centred education. Our inaugural AI x EI Conference, a thought-leadership summit for Heads and Senior Leaders, takes place on Thursday 30 April. Find out more here: AI x EI Conference 2026
