Palmer Park Stadium in Reading was buzzing with anticipation yesterday as schools from across the group came together to compete in this year’s Wishford Athletics Day.

Students from Cricklade Manor Prep, Hatherop Castle School, Heywood Prep, St David’s Prep, St Edward’s Prep, The Mead School, Westonbirt Prep, Rupert House School, High March School and St Mary’s Prep all travelled from across the south of England to represent their schools, some from as far away as Kent. In the end, it proved to be a record-breaking day, with many previously held records being smashed!

It’s clear to see that the value of events like this extends beyond the moments on the podium. Competing in a large-scale athletics event gives pupils the opportunity to experience the excitement and challenge of representing their school alongside hundreds of fellow competitors. For many, it’s a chance to perform in a professional athletics stadium, test themselves against strong opposition, and demonstrate the skills they have developed through months of training and preparation. But it’s also an opportunity to develop qualities that matter just as much off the track and field. Throughout the day, pupils demonstrated resilience, determination and sportsmanship, learning to perform under pressure, celebrate the achievements of others, and represent their schools with pride.

Well done to all the young athletes who competed, and thank you to all the staff who made it possible. The day was a wonderful celebration of talent and teamwork.
